From Preform Design to Mass Production: Meto Provides Full Process Technical Support

A preform mold is not a simple off the shelf product. It is a precision tool that must work with your specific preform design, your injection machine, your material, and your production goals. Buying a mold is only part of the journey. From preform design to mass production, many steps require technical knowledge and experience.

Meto does not just sell molds. We provide full process technical support. Before you buy. During manufacturing. After delivery. During production. Years later. This article explains the technical support Meto provides at each stage of your preform production journey.

Part 1: Preform Design Support

Many customers come to Meto with a bottle but no preform design. Others have a preform design but are not sure if it will work. Meto engineers provide preform design support.

Initial Consultation

Meto starts by understanding your needs. Bottle volume and shape, material type such as virgin PET or rPET, target preform weight, neck finish standard, annual production volume, and injection machine specifications.

Based on this information, Meto provides recommendations on cavitation, steel grade, and runner type.

Preform Design

If you do not have a preform design, Meto can create one. Our engineers calculate the preform length, diameter, and wall thickness based on your bottle shape. We consider blow up ratio, material distribution, and gate location. The design is shared as a 3D model for your review.

Design Optimization

If you have an existing preform design, Meto can optimize it. We look for opportunities to reduce weight while maintaining bottle strength. We check for potential molding issues such as thick sections that may cause crystallization. We recommend gate location and size.

Neck Finish Selection

Meto helps you select the correct neck finish for your application. PCO 1881 for carbonated soft drinks. PCO 1810 for still water. 38 millimeter for juice and oil. Or custom designs. We ensure the neck finish is compatible with standard capping equipment.

Part 2: Mold Design and Simulation Support

Once the preform design is complete, Meto designs the mold. Our support continues throughout this phase.

Mold Flow Analysis

Meto performs mold flow analysis before building the mold. The analysis shows how molten PET fills the cavity. It identifies potential problems such as air traps, weld lines, and unbalanced fill. Meto shares the analysis results with you. We explain what the results mean and how we will address any issues.

Cooling Simulation

Cooling is critical for cycle time and preform quality. Meto uses CFD or computational fluid dynamics to simulate cooling. The simulation shows temperature distribution across the cavity. Meto optimizes cooling channel placement for uniform cooling. You receive a report showing expected temperature variation.

Design Review Meeting

Before manufacturing begins, Meto holds a design review meeting with you. We present the 3D model, mold flow analysis results, cooling simulation results, expected cycle time, and expected mold life. You approve the design before any steel is cut. No surprises.

Part 3: Manufacturing Support

During mold manufacturing, Meto keeps you informed.

Progress Updates

Meto provides weekly updates on mold manufacturing progress. You receive photos of the mold at key stages. Rough machining complete. Heat treatment done. Final machining finished. Assembly in progress. Trial molding scheduled.

Customer Visits

If you wish to visit Meto during manufacturing, you are welcome. You can inspect the mold in process. You can witness trial molding. Meto engineers will answer your questions.

Part 4: Trial Molding Support

Trial molding is the most important quality check. Meto supports you before, during, and after trial molding.

Pre Trial Planning

Before trial molding, Meto confirms that you have the correct material, that your injection machine is available for final testing, and that you have personnel ready to receive samples.

Trial Molding Execution

Meto performs trial molding on a production grade injection machine. We run the mold for at least 100 cycles to reach thermal equilibrium. We collect 30 consecutive cycles of sample preforms. We measure preform weight for every cavity. We measure critical dimensions. We inspect for visual defects.

Sample Shipment

Meto ships sample preforms to you before shipping the mold. You can test the samples on your blow molding line. You can test caps on the preform neck. This is your opportunity to verify that the preform works with your downstream equipment.

Trial Molding Report

Meto provides a detailed trial molding report. The report includes process parameters used such as temperatures, pressures, and speeds, cycle time achieved, cavity to cavity weight variation, dimensional measurement data, visual inspection results, and recommendations for production startup.
